Part 1 — Roles & Goals

Roles & Goals

The foundation the whole planner is built on.
Roles & Goals

The Roles & Goals section is the foundation on which the Roterunner Purpose Planner is created. Connecting these dots will ensure that you move forward with clarity and purpose.

The truth is that success in one area of our life does not automatically mean success in others, and often we simply don't devote enough purposeful energy to what we claim really matters to us. By defining your role first and establishing why that role matters is the easiest way to get started. It's the first big step towards clarity of purpose as it defines who you are and who you want to be. Whether you're a parent, an entrepreneur, a career professional or someone trying to get fit, defining the role first sets up the canvas to establish your priorities.

Step by step

How to use this section

  1. Establish Your Roles
Assign a “role” to each stream of your life. Eg: Parent, Partner, Entrepreneur, Investor, Professional, Fit & Healthy Person etc. This defines the parameters for goal setting.

  2. Set Out Your “Why?”
When things get tough or when you lack commitment, establishing clear reasons for setting out the goals is critical. This is what motivates you to push through when complacence, distraction or frustration creeps in.

  3. Create Your Goals
The goals are the end-point for achievement. Make them SMART (Specific, Measurable, Actionable, Realistic and Time-Bound). Think about not just what you want, but what those that rely on you need as well.

  4. Break Down Your Goals Into Daily, Weekly & Monthly Actions
Work backwards from your goals. Do your research and build up a list of daily, weekly or monthly tasks and actions that will hold you accountable and move you steadily towards your goals.

Tips

Make it yours

Use the Knowledge, Skill & Desire paradigm

For every goal score yourself out of 5 for Knowledge, Skill & Desire. You need all three to be in harmony if you are going to achieve your goals. Once you know where you stand, you can plan the actions required to improve each area.

The roles & goals do take some time and thought to set up, but once done it works like a landing zone for what really matters to you. When you find yourself losing motivation or getting off track, reflecting on this section will help remind you of what matters, so you can reset your intentions and redefine how you plan your time.
